The first snow!

2020 continues to surprise us.

This morning we woke up to a blanket of white fresh snow all over. The tilled fields were covered, the evergreens had white snow softly laid upon their branches. The chickens weren’t too excited to head out and about in it either!

The second round of snow has come through. We weren’t sure of how much to expect so we spent the day before doing some winter prep around the farm.  Our to-do list doesn’t seem to be getting any shorter and there is still field work to be done.

We headed out Saturday afternoon once the temps rose and began taking inventory on the chicken coops. Our first coop houses not just chickens but also our guinnea girls, turkeys and our handsome peacock- Kevin. Typically the birds enjoy their breakfast in the plush green grass, but with winter coming we brought out some old feeders for them that will be easy to move in the case of a blizzard. All the windows were covered and we added in a heated water unit. Our silkie coop has been pretty secure already since they don’t love the cooler temps. We added outdoor water units to the goose yard and added plenty of bedding in their as well. They do fine in the winter, they have plenty of little bungalows that they can hide in if needed.

We also worked on putting away random toys, the patio cushions that seem to blow away every day. There is no hiding from the wind here, it is fierce- every single day. We put away the bikes and scooters- mister sure misses riding them with his friends. He hung his head low as he put them away. Hopefully next year he will have find some friends he can ride with. I also worked at planting some tulip and other flower bulbs. It may be too cold to have planted them, we will see, but I would sure love to see some color around here in the Spring!

Night came and we were tired! We planned on having a low key Sunday as we anticipated the snowfall. We had our favorite soup for supper to keep the bellies warm overnight. I’ll leave you with the recipe:

Cheeseburger Soup

In crockpot add 1 box of chicken broth, 4-6 medium potatoes (peeled, washed and cubed) cook in crock pot on high 4-6 hours. When there is about 2 hours or so left, add in 1 lb of cooked/drained ground beef. One hour left- add in 1 cup of milk and 3/4 of a box of velveeta. Mix as it melts.
