Summer is over

September has arrived! The temps still remain high and the humidity still hangs around. We have had some rain the last few weeks, enough to make the grass grow. The green leaves on the oak tree have started to turn brown, beans have started to turn and the corn stalks are about 75% brown. It’s nice being able to leave the windows open a bit- until the pesky black bugs find their way in.

We didn’t do much for gardening this year, I regret that now. Next year we have bigger plans. I did get quite a few flower beds in and we have all loved the pop of color my zinnias and sunflowers have made around the farm. I’ve heard that the farm used to have beautiful flower beds, so I’m hoping the women before me were proud.

As this was our first full summer here, this summer was spent working. We had some landscaping to do, built the frame for the front deck, learning roles of who will do what like mowing. We’ve been in drought much of summer so it made getting work done easier. We added in turkeys so a platform to feed them was put in as well as a nesting box upgrade for the hens. These hens have to have some of the best laying quarters in all the county! They are spoiled! We found a plum tree so they got to enjoy some of those after sweet corn season was over.

We also attended our first block party. We’ve enjoyed getting to know some of those that live in our neighborhood, we often go on gator rides in the evenings and stop to visit. I remember my grandparents excited when their neighbors popped in to visit- usually bringing a fruit cake or FFA fruit box at Christmas time. The in-laws tell us how the adults around here used to get together for card parties and the kids would play. I hope that is something we can fire back up. I think we all would welcome the company!

I’ll leave you with a photo of one of our summer adventures. We attended a Hot Air Balloon Classic and it was amazing! It was so peaceful being under that clear blue sky as we watched the balloons go up. If you haven’t seen something like this- add it to your bucket list!
