I always appreciate this part of summer where the guys are just waiting to get into the field. To keep them busy, this is the time where local elevators and seed companies host customer appreciation events. These events also mean that it gets me out of cooking supper a few times this month!!! Yay!!
Last night I attended the final one of the season. Normally the boys go- and my oldest (she’s studying Ag Business in college so it’s right up her alley). However, with this being the last one, I tagged along. These meetings always remind me of when I used to hold direct sales parties. There’s always food, door prizes, catalogs, and a presentation of some sort- except this is with men, usually wearing bibs or farm jeans. It’s interesting sitting back hearing how everyone does things differently, their opinions on new technology and hearing the guys swap stories.
I remember the first one I went to shortly after my husband and I were married. He sold me on the idea that it was like going on a date. Any new farm wife grabs at the chance for a date from her farmer before harvest! Naturally, I wear some semi-nice clothes and sandals and show up with our youngest who was just walking. He failed to tell me that it was literally in a mowed ditch on the side of the road, not indoors or on cement. I fought off mosquitos and chiggers all night while I kept having to keep the baby from trying to eat seed corn out of the field. I’ve always been cautious with my husband’s date night ideas after that!
All in all it was a nice event. My father-in-law was given a gift for being a customer for 20 years, his dad also was a customer. Getting that gift with the next 2 generations along side him was a special moment. Hopefully we can continue for another 20 years!
