Field Meals

My grandma never had a drivers license, she said she never needed it- if she was going somewhere, Grandpa was too. Sometimes she would need to take him a meal to the field, it’s the only time I remember her driving. She would head out to Grandpa’s old Chevy truck, wearing a handkerchief on her head and take us on down the road to find Grandpa. I don’t ever remember what type of food she brought him, but I do remember it always involved a thermos of coffee. She was nervous as she drove, no music playing and I’m sure her little legs had a hard time reaching the pedals! Grandma didn’t take out meals often, she instead made sure Grandpa had a nice breakfast (no matter how early), a good supper and Sunday dinners were the most important. Sunday dinners meant the whole family was there, they were always the most special!

My mother in law usually fed the guys sandwiches for lunch and once our son was born, she started making care packages for him. He always loved opening his care package to find snack crackers, black olives or cookies! She has always been great about offering to bring a meal out or having supper ready for us when we are all in the field. One year we did a harvest party to commence harvest. She pulled out her fancy dishes, we even dressed up in dresses! It was a lot of fun!

Now that I’m the newest wife on the homestead, I do enjoy taking meals out to the field. The kids love it even more! We also have enjoyed eating maidrites in the garage while husband works on equipment. I think my kids just enjoy eating places other than the kitchen! We do have less acres than previous generations, so it does make coming in to eat for lunch a lot easier than I’m sure it was in the past but I hope that my kids will be able to share those memories with their kids some day!
