Winter Storm Warning

The other day we had the biggest winter storm come through- it dropped the most snow we’ve seen at one time since being at the farm. 12+ inches of snow fell over 24 hours, including a brief rain shower. We knew the storm was coming, so I made sure to meal prep and get my shopping done ahead of time. School was cancelled on Friday but I still had some appointments that we needed to get to. Luckily they were all in the morning before the roads got too bad. The oldest needed stiches out from an earlier surgery and the youngest got his first Covid shot. We celebrated both appointments with a stop at the bakery before heading home. Fresh donuts always makes the day better!

The snow was so beautiful. The flakes were huge and fluffy, however it began adding up quickly! We kept the coop closed and moved their feeders inside. The ducks and geese don’t mind the elements, but they do have plenty of shelters to choose from that were all stocked with fresh hay. By evening, the husband was home and we were ready to just let nature do it’s thing. We had an omelet bar and watched movies as the snow fell.

Once we woke Saturday morning, we were surprised at how much snow had accumulated! The drifts were high, the ones out front were as tall as our deck! As pretty as it was- there was a lot of work to be done! We spent the rest of the day moving snow- by skid loader and shovel. There was too much to be done in one day but we got the main points clear before sunset. We had a “dip day” in the evening- warm crock pot dips hit the spot after a day of moving now!

Sunday the husband spent more time moving snow as the kids and I went in to town to Church. He got quite a bit done while we were gone and came in to make us cheeseburgers on the grill for lunch. We planned on soups for supper and went out to enjoy the afternoon sledding and watching our new lab play in the snow. Not often do we get nice winter weather where we can enjoy the snow!

During winter storms and blizzards, I try to come up with fun meal ideas that we can all work on and enjoy- here’s some of our favorites:

  • Pie night! Frito pie or hamburger pie with pie for dessert!
  • Nacho night! We use a huge baking sheet- spread out the chips, add toppings. No plates needed!
  • Soup kick off! The husband made potato soup and I made chili- we enjoyed both!
  • Square foods- homemade pizza, meat loaf in squares- then bars cut in squares for dessert!
  • Popcorn night! We do homemade with the popper, it’s so delish! Some do toppings, some don’t.
  • Match a movie with a meal. Example: Cloudy with a chance of meatballs with meatballs for supper!
  • When winter is really relentless and we are stuck inside for awhile, we like to grill inside or plan on a picnic in the living room to remember what it’s like when the world isn’t a frozen tundra!

I’ll do another post on some winter activities we’ve done to help with the winter blues. Today we are lucky enough to have decent weather again, but it will be back to below 0 mid week, so we are going to head out and enjoy it while we can!
